Utilising the “Low Cost Traffic Management Techniques (LCTM)”, the Pune city police claimed to have achieved a 10.44 percent rise in the average speed of vehicles on the main roads in its jurisdiction.
As per the data shared during the annual press conference on Monday, the average speed of vehicles on the main roads in Pune city was 22.5 kilometers per hour in the past. Now, the average speed on main roads is 19.5 kilometers per hour, police said.
The series of changes implemented by the Pune traffic police were coordinated by Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil in association with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other agencies.
The various measures undertaken by the traffic police and PMC for increasing average speed and reducing vehicular congestions, included – 23 junction closures or right turn bans, seven one way roads, synchronisation of 101 traffic signals, opening/closing of medians at 20 spots, shifting of 19 bus stops, relocation of five luxury bus pick up points, surfacing on 12 arterial roads, removing six bottlenecks, fixing problems at ten water logging points on main roads.
Besides, enforcement action against traffic violations was increased this year. The number of e-challans in 2023 were 10,32,421, and 11,04,158 in 2024. The e-challans in 2025 went up to 18,37,375 police said.
Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Police said along with an increase in average speed, the monthly average severe traffic congestion at the major locations in the city has reduced by 50 percent. There were 300 monthly average traffic congestions in Pune in the previous years, now gone down to 150 in 2025.
Police said the result was achieved due to improvement in traffic flow on major roads in the city, along with rise in cases against triple seat, wrong side and drunk driving.
“Zero tolerance on drunk driving”
During the special drives by the traffic control branch of Pune city police, as many as 6281 cases were filed against people found driving under the influence of alcohol between January 1 and December 23, 2025. The number of ‘drunk drive’ cases during the special drive in 2024 was 5286, while in 2023 it was only 384. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said there is “zero tolerance” against the drunk drivers.
Police had intensified the action against drunk driving following the Porsche crash incident. As many as 68,940 triple seat cases were filed between January 1 and 23 December 2025, as against 48,479 in 2024 and 22,087 in 2023.
Decrease in road accident deaths
Police said 275 persons have died in 260 road mishaps so far in the year 2025. A decrease to the 345 road accident deaths of 2024, 351 deaths in 2023 and 325 deaths in 2022.
