Salem, May 9: A 70-year-old woman died and six persons, including two women, were admitted to Government and private hospitals here following complaints of acute gastroenteritis in Nazhikkalpatti village on Monday.
A team of officials from Health Department rushed to the village and provided medicines to 958 persons at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in the village as a preventive measure.
Official sources told The Indian Express that Chinnammal of Nazhikkalpatti village, who was admitted to the hospital two days ago, died of gastroenteritis on monday.
Her daughter Rajambal (45) and son Selvam (34) and four others have been admitted to the Government and private hospitals here for treatment.
Two persons also died in Tiruchengode taluk. Pappal (59) and her son Venkat (40), coolie labourers hailing from Elanthaikottai in Tiruchengode taluk, reportedly died of vomiting and diarrhoea after they were admitted to the Erode Government Hospital here on Friday last.
It is learnt that the son and the mother were brought to the Government Hospital on Thursday. While Venkat died the day he was admitted, Pappal died the next day. According to sources, the two died of acute gastroenteritis.
When contacted by The Indian Express, Namakkal District Collector Dayanand Kattaria said officials and medical teams have been rushed to the spot to assess the situation and to ascertain as to whether there is any report of water-borne diseases, so that appropriate action can be taken to prevent further outbreak of the epidemic.
