Charl Langeveldt became the first bowler to get a 50th over hat-trick at Barbados to beat West Indies by one run. In our series, we look at the last six ODIs where one run separated the sides.

One would expect ‘finisher’ Bevan and Andrew Symonds to score eight off the last over. Not when Chaminda Vaas is in a Yorker-mood. Vaas bowled two unscorable Yorkers to Symonds which left Bevan needing four off the last ball. An aerial drive towards long-off was dropped but still didn’t go far enough to let the Aussies run all four. Symonds should remember the over.

‘Audacious’ got a whole new meaning when Douglas Marillier unleashed on Glen McGrath — what do you call them — leg glance or sweeps over the keeper’s head. Needing 15 off the last over, Marillier hit two such boundaries but with three runs needed of the last ball, McGrath bowled a Yorker which couldn’t, well, be swept or glanced.

Not so long ago, Jacques Kallis could be picked for his bowling skills only — he used to bowl the slog overs, and do a good job. In this last over Kallis yorked Andrew Caddick, and didn’t give a single loose delivery to Chris Read who had brought England back from the brink. All the rescue work by Ealham and Read fell short by one, as all Protean pace bowlers bowled brilliantly.

This time, Zimbabwe were on the right side of a one-run result. Heath Streak got the dangerous Adam Parore out his first ball and the rest was easy as Daniel Vettori and Shayne O’Connor, the last pair, had not many chances. But what really did New Zealand in were the wickets of Chris Harris and Simon Doull to Paul Strang’s legspin the 49th over.

They are no chokers, but Kiwis do seem to have habit of enacting miraculous comebacks and then falling short by you guessed it one run. And a certain Chris Harris is, more often than not, involved. Ironically enough, it was the team more renowned as chokers that held their nerves in the face of an unbeaten 62 run eighth wicket stand between harris and Daniel vettori- the stand came when it seemed it was all over.

This was one of the best one-on-one ODI series, when South Africa still evenly matched Australians. If any side did the catching up, it was Aussies. Damien Fleming was to deal the killer blow in 1999 World Cup but he gave prelude in only his second ODI when he bowled three dot balls in the last over to tie the 8-match series- whole series decided on the last ball. That was the turning point in Aus- RSA contests, as Aussied did all the catching up and still ended 1-1 and 4-4 in the tests and ODIs respectively.
