November 18: Aakarsh Rai (6) of Model English, Dombivli, established himself as the sole leader in the boys under-10 category after the sixth round in the Bournvita Inter-school chess tournament. Aakarsh beat Sanju Malaikal (5) of St Stanislaus, with whom he was joint leaders at the end of the fifth round. Vaibhav Saxena of Fr Agnel and Sagar Sadavarte of Navi Mumbai share the lead in the tough boys open category at the end of the sixth round with 5.5 points each.

Top seed Vaibhav (Elo 2164) lived up to expectations when he beat under-12 champion Sameer Thakkar of Jankidevi.

Top seed Ketki Kulkarni of Chandrakant Patkar, the 1997 British Open winner, shares the lead with Trichi Chawla of Fr Agnel with 5.5 points each in the girls’ under-10 section.

The girls open section is wide open after six rounds with Niharika Thakkar of Jankidevi, Tanvi Thakur of St Anne’s Borivli, Mugdha Variyar of Gokuldham, Leann Almeida of Mary Immaculate and Prajakta Yevle of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya in joint lead with fivepoints each.

RCF, MbPT in final
Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) and Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) made the final of the IX Mumbai City District volleyball championship at the MbPT Sports Club ground, Mazagaon, today. RCF defeated Mumbai Police 25-14, 25-18 and MbPT Sport Club beat State Bank of India 25-19, 25-17.

Chembur YMCA rally
Chembur YMCA rallied from a 21-point half-time deficit to enter the final of the inaugural Acharya College U-22winter basketball league at Chembur today. Chembur beat hosts Acharya 58-43. In the other semi-final, Somaiya SC beat School of Basketball 71-54.
