Chandigarh, Nov 17: Nearly 90,000 students from 104 schools linked hands to form a human chain as part of the quot;chain polioquot; programme to spread awareness about Pulse Polio.

The rally was flagged off from various schools around 10.30 a.m. Children moved on the pavements holding placards and banners displaying slogans about polio. The formation of human chains started around 10.55 a.m. along the nearly 90 km stretch, already specified. A siren blew at the specified time to signify the beginning and end of the formation of the chain.

About 2,000 teachers from various government schools accompanied students in forming the human chain.

This was a part of the nationwide effort by Rotary. Separate chains were also formed by students of government schools in Karsan, Dhanas and Manimajra. Students of Government High School, Hallomajra, also formed human chain.

UT Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar joined the chain at Sector 9-10 road.DSP Traffic S.S. Randhawa told Newsline that there were no traffic snarls due to the human chains. Adequate force was deployed across the city to ensure smooth movement of commuters. Some children would move across the road and form a chain for two minutes and then join other children on the pavement.Then, they would retain the chain on the pavement for another five minutes.
