
MARCH 15: A 35-year-old man was arrested on charges of raping a nine-month-old at Andheri east on Sunday evening.
The accused Vishnu Maurya picked up the infant apparently for a walk while her mother was busy hanging clothes to dry and her grandmother with household chores, according to Inspector V P Chandanshive. Maurya, who worked in a leather workshop, had moved into the neighbourhood at Tangamma Chawl, Parsi Wadi off Sahar road only two months ago.
An hour later Maurya returned with the child who was crying uncontrollably. The mother told the police that at first she thought the child was hungry and tried to feed her milk. Noticing blood stains on her daughter8217;s clothes she thought the infant could be injured. However, when she checked closely she was shocked to find the infant bleeding in her underclothes, Chandanshive stated.
When questioned Maurya pleaded ignorance saying he returned in haste when he found the girl had defecated. The mother raised an alarm. Neighbours soon gathered and beat upMaurya when he tried to flee. But he was nabbed by a police patrol and sent him to Cooper Hospital. The infant was first rushed to Mitra Nursing Home at Oshiwara and later admitted to Cooper Hospital.
