In a move that could go a long way in providing affordable housing to the economically weaker sections, the housing and urban development department today notified a policy under which 5 per cent area has been reserved for the poor in all mega housing projects, both public and private, coming up in the state.
It has been mandated that the applicant must be a resident of Punjab for the last 10 years and the applicant must not own residential property in Chandigarh or Punjab.
The cut-off income limit has been kept at Rs 10,000 per month for one room tenement and Rs 15,000 for two room set, said a spokesperson.
The cost of the tenements would be determined by the local development authority concerned in consultation with the promoters.
The policy encourages use of the latest low-cost technique so that the housing needs of the poor can be met at affordable rates.
Allotment of houses shall be made to the eligible applicants through a computerised draw.
