In a move that would ease the tedious process of filing tax returns, the Finance Ministry today said that starting July 26, all assesses can file their returns at designated post offices in the country.
Central Board of Direct Taxes CBDT chairperson M H Kherawala also said that the department has extended the deadline for assesses filing under non-auditable accounts from July 31 to October 31.
While the salaried class still have to abide by the July 31 deadline, the extension is for non-corporate tax payers having business income and for those who have to use Form 3B for disclosing their fringe benefit tax.
In fact, three new return forms 8212; Form 1 for corporate tax payers, Form 2 for non-corporate tax payers having business income and Form 3B 8212; were notified today and the deadline for filing of returns was extended for those using these forms in order to allow the assesses familiarise themselves with the new forms.
However, from July 26 all assesses can file their returns in post offices by submitting their return forms along with the concerned documents in an envelope.
For this, the assessee must mention his PAN number, the name and address, the assessment year and the ward/circle on the envelope and submit it without sealing it. The officer in the post office would receive these forms by marking an acknowledgement receipt on one of the copies of the returns.
In all there would be 2,000 such post offices across the country which would receive the return forms and names of the post offices would be known by tomorrow, sources said.
