GURDASPUR, Oct 4: As many as 100 doctors have been dismissed from service and notices recommending sack of another 250 doctors sent to Punjab Public Service Commission PPSC on the charges of dereliction of their duties.

Stating this here yesterday, Minister of State for Health Hari Singh Zeera said the action had been taken against these doctors because they were found derelict in their duties during 50 raids he conducted in the government hospitals in Punjab to ensure their presence on duty.

He said when he made an unannounced visit to the hospital here at around 1.45 p.m., he found all the staff present. The minister, however, expressed his unhappiness over the state of hygiene in the hospital.

The minister said the Health Department had requested the PPSC to fill up 484 vacancies of doctors in the government hospitals in next three months. Hospitals in Gurdaspur and Amritsar district were the worst hit by these vacancies, he added.

Zeera claimed there was now no shortage of medicines in the hospitals, and medicines worth Rs 7.5 crore have been purchased by the Health Department, while Punjab State Health System Corporation had chipped in with Rs 3.5 crore.

Core worth medicines this year. The Corporation has also placed tender for purchase of Rs 2.50 crore worth of medicines to ensure adequate availability, he added.
