Putting on some kind of oil around her eyes. Removing eye makeup and putting on an emollient cream. That’s all that she would do. So, these are, I think, the basics,” she said on her YouTube podcast.

Dr Shweta Nakhawa, consultant dermatologist, KIMS Hospital, Thane, concurred that good skin doesn’t always come from a 10-step routine; it comes from consistency and understanding your skin’s needs. “Sharmila Tagore’s routine of cleansing, gentle eye care, and moisturising forms the three pillars of healthy skin. Removing makeup every day prevents clogged pores and dullness. Using a mild oil or cream around the eyes keeps the delicate under-eye area hydrated and stops fine lines,” said Dr Nakhawa.

With so many new products available, do you think people are overdoing skincare today?
To some extent, yes, affirmed Dr Nakhawa. Skincare has become trend-driven, and people often layer too many active ingredients like acids, retinols, and serums without guidance, said Dr Nakhawa. “This can lead to irritation and damage to the skin barrier. Simplicity still works best. A cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, and a specific treatment if needed (like vitamin C or retinol at night) are enough for most people,” said Dr Nakhawa.
What can we learn from old-school beauty routines like Sharmila Tagore’s?
The focus was always on nurturing rather than correcting.
“Natural oils like almond or coconut, good sleep, a balanced diet, and minimal stress were their real beauty secrets. Modern skincare can complement that, but the basics remain the same: cleanse, hydrate, protect, and repeat,” said Dr Nakhawa.
Any skincare advice for women who use heavy makeup regularly?
According to Dr Nakhawa, always double-cleanse starting with micellar water or cleansing oil, then use a mild face wash. “Avoid sleeping with makeup on. Follow up with a soothing moisturiser and under-eye cream. Give your skin a break on makeup-free days; it truly helps it breathe and recover,” said Dr Nakhawa.
