Tyeb Mehta’s Girl in Love is estimated between Rs 70 and 90 lakh
Last December, Christie’s successfully closed its debut auction of modern Indian art in the country with sale of Rs 96,59,37,500 (USD 15,455,000) worth of art, surpassing all expectations. It also created a record for Indian art sold at an auction with VS Gaitonde’s untitled work that went for a whopping Rs 23.7 crore. With this experience behind it, the London-based art auction house promised to return with a second one soon.
Exactly a year later, comes the announcement of an auction of modern and contemporary Indian works, to be held on December 11 at the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai.
The overwhelming success of its maiden auction made art experts wonder if the recession-hit 2008 art market was finally on its feet or whether it was simply the excitement following a global house’s first auction.
Even so, the auction house returns with a solid show with 80 lots dedicated to modern and contemporary Indian art. Highlights include Jehangir Sabavala’s The Green Cape (estimated between Rs 1.2 and 1.8 crore), an early work by Tyeb Mehta, titled Girl in Love (estimated between Rs 70 and 90 lakh) and Bhupen Khakhar’s Untitled (Chavanu) estimated between Rs 40 and 60 lakh. Apart from works by modern masters, lots dedicated to contemporary artists such as Subodh Gupta, Rashid Rana, Thukral & Tagra, and Bharti Kher, among others, have been included in the auction.
A part of the benefits of this section will go to the Khoj International Artists’ Association, a Delhi-based artist residency.
