In a world where a plethora of new beauty trends are constantly emerging and dying, one thing still remains constant: the cathartic power of a hairstyle that makes you look good. In the quest for finding the one that hits the sweet spot, knowing which hairstyle will complement your face is vital.

Honey Verma, senior stylist at Myrah Spa, Salon, & Dermatology and Vipul Chudasama, hair specialist at Ikonic Professional tell indianexpress.com which hairstyles you can choose to go for based on your face shape.

Experts describe six prominent face shapes that determine which hairstyles you can opt for:

Round face

Round faces have soft features and full cheeks, with the width and length of the face being almost equal. Chudasama suggests that people with this shape should select “styles with volume on top and length below the chin, like long layers or a layered bob” which have the ability to “elongate the face”.

Oval face

If you have an oval-shaped face, then you are lucky as Chudasama says that almost any hairstyle will look good on you. Oval faces are noted for their balanced symmetry and soft jawline. The hair specialist recommends picking a style that incorporates soft, layered cuts or a side part can enhance the natural shape.

Square face

For a square face, Verma explains that softening the face with a round haircut is a good way to balance out sharp features. “I would give a round haircut. Never a bob since it would not complement the face, it would look very severe. To soften a square face I would do a gentle rounded cut,” he explains.

Rectangle face

A person with a rectangle face has a noticeably longer face, with the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline being of the same width. Verma says that the choice of hairstyle mostly remains the same, “but they could also pull off the bob/lob look if done right”.

Heart face

Heart faces have broad foreheads and cheekbones as well as a narrow chin that curves inwards giving it the shape. Chin-length bobs, side-swept bangs, and layers around the chin will make anyone with a heart-shaped face look flattering, Chudasma says, adding that they provide a balance to a heart-shaped face.

Diamond face

Prominent cheekbones as well as narrow forehead and chin are characteristic features of people with a diamond face. Chudasama advises them to embrace chin-length bobs and styles that can give more fullness at the jawline.

For those unsure about their face shape or overwhelmed by the variety of hairstyle options at their disposal, both Verma and Chudasama suggest that you should visit a professional hairstylist. Chudasama adds, “A hairstylist can assess your face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle to recommend a hairstyle that suits you best.” In the end what is important, according to Verma, is your confidence in being able to pull off different hairstyles and doing what makes you happy.
