The indefinite protest by residents and shopkeepers against the closure of small shops operating from homes in Phase 11, Mohali, continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday, with leaders from various political parties arriving at the protest site to extend their support.
The protesters alleged that the action being carried out by the Municipal Corporation and GMADA was “one-sided and unjust”, stating that it posed a direct threat to their livelihood and the survival of their families. “This drive is an attack on our daily bread,” said several shopkeepers, adding that the move would render hundreds of families jobless.
Several political leaders reached the site on Saturday to express solidarity with the agitating residents. Shiromani Akali Dal district president Parvinder Singh Baidwan, and Congress leader and Deputy Mayor Kuljit Bedi, and BJP leader Abha Bansal interacted with the protesters and assured them of support. The leaders said that sealing shops without adequate notice or alternative arrangements was “inhumane” and unacceptable.
Local residents, including Sonia Sidhu, Raman Arora, Vicky Garg and Bala Thakur, said their small neighbourhood shops were their only source of income. “These shops have been running for years. Suddenly sealing them has pushed us to the brink of unemployment,” they said.
The protesters alleged selective enforcement by the authorities, claiming that while Phase 11 was being targeted in the name of rules and regulations, similar shops were functioning openly in several other parts of the city. Anger and helplessness were evident among those gathered at the protest site.
Demanding a humane approach, the protesters urged the administration to hold discussions with the affected shopkeepers and work out a permanent and practical solution. They warned that the indefinite dharna would continue until their demands were considered.
