The second day of the 29th Kabaddi Tournament at Sohana drew huge crowds with thrilling bullock cart races and kabaddi competitions.
The 29th Kabaddi Tournament, organised by the Baidwan Kabaddi Club in memory of Jathedar Hanuman Singh, attracted huge crowds on Saturday on the second day of kabaddi and other traditional games at Sohana, Mohali.
One of the major highlights of the event was the bullock cart races held at Saras Mela ground in Sector 88. A total of 200 bulls participated in 100 high-octane races, thrilling huge crowds of spectators at the venue.
According to the organisers, the joint bullock cart of Jaggi Bhamian and Beant Maherna clinched the top prize by completing the 1,000-foot track in an impressive 20.19 seconds, winning a Hero Honda motorcycle in the main race. Sukhpal Reli’s bullock cart secured the second position and won Rs 21,000, while Giani Lang’s bullock cart finished third, bagging Rs 15,000. Cash prizes were awarded from the fourth to the 21st positions, with the 21st-place finisher receiving Rs 2,100. Additionally, participants finishing from 22nd to 36th positions were presented decorative bull covers as consolation prizes.
The Kabaddi Cup at Sohana also featured kabaddi matches across various weight categories, along with open competitions for girls, adding diversity and inclusivity to the sporting event.
Club patron Rupa Sohana and municipal councillor Harjit Singh Bholu said the tournament began with an ardas (prayer) performed by Baba Parmjit Singh Hansali Wale during the bullock cart races. Baba Hansali Wale also extended financial assistance of ₹51,000 to the Baidwan Kabaddi Club. They added that 80 pairs of bulls participated in the races, with the top 21 pairs receiving cash prizes, while 15 bull pairs were awarded warm bull covers sponsored by Lali Sohana. The first prize motorcycle was sponsored by Baljinder Balli, renowned sports promoter.
In kabaddi results, Pir Khan secured first place and Harjit Club finished second in the 42 kg category. In the 47 kg category, Sadhanwas emerged winner, followed by Chirvi in second place. The Best Raider and Best Defender (Jaffi) were honoured with new bicycles.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Punjabi singer Veet Baljit, accompanied by Manoj Sharma and fellow artistes Aadi and Jaskirat Sajan, entertained the audience. Punjabi film actress Mohini Toor also marked her presence. On the occasion, a large number of bicycles were distributed by Rupa Sohana to encourage young sportspersons.
The organisers announced that open kabaddi matches and horse races will be held on Sunday, December 14, with the horse races expected to be a major attraction along with kabaddi matches.
