From helping in weight loss to aiding heart health and ensuring proper digestion, the benefits of consuming oats regularly are said to be many. So, in our What Happens to your Body series, we decided to ask this question. Dt Deepali Sharma, clinical nutritionist, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi said that one of the effects of daily oats consumption is its potential to help in reducing weight.

“Oats are rich in fibre, which contributes to a feeling of fullness and satiety, potentially reducing overall calorie intake. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals aiming to manage their weight. Moreover, the fibre in oats helps regulate bowel movements, contributing to a healthy digestive system and potentially preventing constipation,” said Sharma.

According to Sharma, oats can lower blood sugar levels considering that the fibre and complex carbohydrates in oats are digested more slowly, leading to a gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream. “This can help prevent spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, making oats a favourable choice for individuals managing diabetes or aiming for more stable energy levels throughout the day,” said Sharma.

The fibre content in oatmeal is also instrumental in positively affecting cholesterol levels, specifically targeting the “bad” LDL cholesterol. “Regular consumption of oats has been associated with a decrease in LDL cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, oats’ role in stabilising blood pressure further contributes to heart health, potentially lowering the risk of hypertension and related cardiovascular complications,” said Sharma.

Beyond heart health and weight management, the impact of oats extends to gut health. The fibre present in oats plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy gut by promoting regular bowel movements and supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract. Sharma mentioned that this, in turn, aids in proper digestion and the removal of toxins and waste from the body, contributing to overall digestive wellness.

What kind of oats can help?

Incorporating oats (steel cut or rolled oats) into your regular diet helps. “Oats, rich in dietary fibre and also contains nutrients like zinc, folate, and magnesium, aid in managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Enjoy oats alone or pair them with almonds, berries, or fruits to enhance both nutritional value and taste,” said Sheela Krishnaswamy, nutrition and wellness consultant.

As a dietitian, Krishnaswamy recommends enhancing the nutritional value of oats by combining them with almonds, offering a double advantage. “Almonds, contain 15 essential nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium, protein, and zinc, and are especially beneficial for individuals managing lifestyle diseases like diabetes and high cholesterol,” said Krishnaswamy.

It’s important to note that while oats offer numerous health benefits, incorporating them into a balanced diet is key. “Pairing oats with other nutritious foods ensures a well-rounded intake of essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients necessary for optimal health,” said Sharma.
