Valentine’s Week originated in ancient Rome, with its roots in the Lupercalia festival, which paired male and female participants to increase fertility and ward off evil spirits.
Today, Valentine’s Week is associated with Saint Valentine, a 3rd-century Catholic priest who preached Christianity in a legal era.
He was executed for secret marriages and fell in love with a jailer’s daughter. On his execution day, Saint Valentine sent a farewell note to his lover, titled “From your Valentine.”
The Church later honoured his sacrifice, and the occasion is now known as St. Valentine’s Day.
