In 5 years, Rs 293 cr paid to 16,000 under Group Accident Insurance Scheme: Govt

THE STATE government on Saturday said that in the past five years, Rs 293 crore has been paid to family members of more than 16,000 people who were killed in accidents, including major disasters such as the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad, Game Zone fire in Rajkot, Harni boat collapse in Vadodara, bridge collapse in Morbi and Takshashila Arcade blaze in Surat.

A statement issued on Saturday said more than 4.12 crore citizens of the state are included in the Group Accident Insurance Scheme at present. The accident insurance schemes under different departments of the state government were unified and implemented by the office of the Insurance Commissioner of the state government after determining the uniform pattern of such schemes.

Under this scheme, payment was made to the families of more than 30 deceased, including four medical students, who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12. Payment was also made to the families of 12 children who died in the Harni accident at Vadodara and other disasters, the statement said.

Under the Group Accident Insurance Scheme, accident insurance cover is provided to beneficiaries and families in 14 sectors including farmers, unorganised workers, primary-secondary school, college and ITI students; police personnel, jail guards, sanitation workers, destitute widows, the disabled, diamond industry artisans and youths participating in entrepreneurial activities. A total insurance cover ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 15 lakh is available under various schemes covering these 14 sectors.
