‘Didn’t matter how much workout I was doing, my weight kept increasing’: Tanishaa Mukerji talks about impact of drastic transformation for Neal ‘n’ Nikki

Tanishaa Mukerji recently shared her experience of extreme weight loss for Neal ‘n’ Nikki and its impact on her body.

The actor, in conversation with Hauterrfly recently, revealed how maintaining a low-carb diet and striving for abs took a toll on her health. “In Neal ‘n’ Nikki, I lost a lot of weight drastically in a very short period. You can’t maintain abs, for women, for a long period of time because fat is very important in a woman’s body. Fat creates oestrogen production. A man can go down to like 14 percent body fat. For women, that is very low… because in men’s bodies, there is only one hormone, which is testosterone. We have 36,000 hormones in our body. We are baby producers. And then what happened was that my hormones went up and down because, after Neal ‘n’ Nikki’s shoot, I started just putting on weight. It didn’t matter how much workout I was doing, my weight kept increasing. At that time I didn’t understand that you cannot be on a low-carb diet indefinitely because your brain needs carbs. Your body needs carbs. So, I was on a no-carb diet indefinitely… I was on a no sugar (diet)… I had gone a little crazy (sic),” she said.

She added, “In terms of fitness, workouts is to mould your body into a particular shape. But that is not going to make you lose weight. That’s when I adopted yoga.”

What are the risks of staying on a low-carb diet for an extended period, especially for women?

Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator, tells indianexpress.com, “Staying on a low-carb diet for an extended period poses several risks, particularly for women. Very low carbohydrate intake can lead to increased mortality risks, including a higher likelihood of death from various causes and significant increases in heart disease and cancer risks. This diet can also disrupt hormonal balance, potentially causing irregular menstrual cycles or amenorrhea due to altered thyroid function and insufficient energy availability.”

Furthermore, she notes that long-term adherence “may result in nutrient deficiencies,” as carbohydrates are vital for obtaining essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, high consumption of saturated fats and animal proteins associated with low-carb diets may elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases. “Overall, while low-carb diets may aid in short-term weight loss, their long-term safety remains questionable, necessitating careful consideration and monitoring to ensure overall health and well-being,” states Malhotra.

Achieving fitness goals without compromising overall health and hormonal balance

Women can achieve their fitness goals while preserving overall health and hormonal balance through a multifaceted approach that emphasises balanced nutrition, appropriate exercise, and recovery. Malhotra recommends engaging in moderate-intensity resistance training and cardiovascular workouts.

However, excessive high-intensity exercise without adequate caloric intake and recovery can lead to hormonal disruptions. Women should ensure sufficient nutrient intake to mitigate such risks, focusing on a diet rich in whole foods that includes adequate protein and healthy fats.
