Embarking on the journey of ageing gracefully is not just about counting the years but embracing habits that nurture your well-being. Actor Sharmila Tagore opened up on Koffee with Karan on ageing gracefully in a “world which has normalised fillers and cosmetic surgeries”. “I think eat well, sleep well, exercise. Just look after yourself. But don’t go for this…too much of botox…not necessary. I don’t think. People are so pretty, anyway. The natural face is the best,” said Tagore.

Learning from her, we decided to ask our in-house experts about ways to age gracefully.

Hydration is your timeless ally. “Adequate water intake supports skin elasticity, aids digestion, and keeps energy levels high,” said Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Global Hospitals, Parel Mumbai.

The general recommendation is to consume about eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but individual needs may vary based on factors such as age, activity level, and climate. Pay attention to your body’s signals for thirst and try to choose water as your primary beverage. “Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness. When the body is well-hydrated, the skin is more likely to appear plump and vibrant,” said Dr Jatin Mittal, cosmetologist, skin expert, and co-founder at Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi.

Next, fuel your body with nature’s goodness by incorporating a rainbow of vegetables and moderate amounts of low glycaemic index fruits into your diet. “These nutrient-packed foods provide antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals essential for maintaining overall health,” described Dr Agarwal.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, improves cardiovascular health, enhances muscle tone, and boosts mood. “Additionally, exercise promotes the production of endorphins, which are natural mood elevators that contribute to a sense of well-being,” said Dr Mittal.

Bid farewell to ultra-refined foods and sugar-laden treats. “These culprits can accelerate ageing by promoting inflammation and impacting skin health. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods that nourish your body from the inside out,” mentioned Dr Agarwal.

Embrace good fats, such as those found in avocados, nuts, and olive oil. According to Dr Agarwal, these fats support brain health, reduce inflammation, and contribute to supple skin. “A balanced, well-rounded diet ensures you’re not just adding years to your life but vitality to your years,” said Dr Agarwal.

In essence, ageing gracefully involves mindful choices that prioritise holistic well-being. By adopting these tips, you pave the way for a radiant and resilient you, proving that age is just a number in the grand symphony of a well-lived life.

Adopt stress-management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or other mindfulness practices. “These methods help reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote a more balanced and resilient response to life’s challenges,” said Dr Mittal.
