Many times, we tend to notice unexplained and mysterious bruises on our arms and legs without getting externally hurt. Have you ever wondered why? Even Anshula Kapoor experienced something like it recently and shared, “Are you also part of the mysterious leg bruises club? or is it just me?”

Well, we have some answers to your questions from our in-house experts.

Why does it occur?

Mysterious bruises on the legs and hands can result from a variety of factors. “Common causes include minor injuries, such as bumping into furniture or other objects, which can lead to blood vessels under the skin breaking and causing discolouration,” said Dr Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.

Bruising occurs when blood vessels beneath the skin are damaged, causing blood to leak out and pool beneath the skin’s surface, resulting in discolouration, added Dr Rajeev Gupta, director, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi.

Is it dangerous?

While occasional bruising is common and often harmless, persistent, unexplained bruising can indicate an underlying medical condition.

“Deficiencies in essential vitamins like Vitamin C or K can affect blood clotting and skin health, potentially leading to easier bruising. Additionally, certain medications or medical conditions, such as blood disorders or liver problems, may contribute to increased bruising,” said Dr Mule.

Common causes of unexplained bruising, explained by Dr Gupta

Minor injuries: Often, unexplained bruising can be attributed to minor injuries or bumps that a person may not even remember. This is particularly common in older adults, as their skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age, making them more susceptible to bruising.

Medications: Certain medications, such as blood thinners, aspirin, and corticosteroids, can increase the tendency to bruise.

Vitamin K deficiency: Vitamin K plays a crucial role in blood clotting. A deficiency in vitamin K can lead to easy bruising and bleeding. A person must ensure to get enough vitamin K from a diet, which includes leafy green vegetables, broccoli, and eggs.

Medical conditions: Several medical conditions, including liver disease, kidney disease, and certain autoimmune disorders, can cause unexplained bruising. These conditions affect the body’s ability to regulate blood clotting, making bruises more likely.

When to seek medical attention

While occasional bruising is generally not a cause for concern, persistent or unusual bruising warrants attention from a healthcare professional. Dr Mule shared, “They can conduct a thorough evaluation, including blood tests, to identify the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment or lifestyle adjustments. If you’re concerned about your bruises, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for personalised guidance based on your specific situation.”

Dr Gupta said that it is essential to seek medical attention if a person experiences any of the following:

Frequent or excessive bruising: If a person notices any bruises frequently or appears to be more severe than usual, they must consult a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Bruising without apparent cause: If a person notices bruises without any recollection of bumping or injuring themselves, it is important to investigate further.

Bruising accompanied by other symptoms: If the bruising is accompanied by other symptoms, such as joint pain, fatigue, or unusual bleeding, it could indicate a more serious underlying condition.

Large or painful bruises: Bruises that are unusually large, painful, or do not heal within the usual two-week timeframe should be evaluated by a doctor.

One must remember that early diagnosis and treatment of any underlying medical conditions can help prevent complications and improve overall health. If a person is concerned about unexplained bruising, don’t hesitate to consult the doctor for a thorough evaluation, Dr Gupta said.
