worry not, we will help you tackle these skin problems efficiently if you're going through your menopause too. (Source: Freepik)Navigating through menopause presents various challenges. Alongside hot sweats, cramps, and mood swings, a plethora of issues emerge. Among them, skin problems during menopause can be particularly distressing. However, worry not, as we’re here to assist you in effectively managing these skin concerns if you’re currently experiencing menopause.
But first, let’s understand what these problems are. According to Dr Patel Nishtha Hitendrabhai, Consultant dermatologist, Kosmoderma, during menopause, women often experience a variety of skin changes due to hormonal shifts.
“Common issues include dryness, thinning of the skin, and reduced elasticity. These changes are primarily caused by a decrease in estrogen production, leading to decreased collagen production and impaired skin barrier function,” she added.
Additionally, other skin problems may include worsening of pre-existing conditions like rosacea or eczema, as well as an increased susceptibility to fungal and bacterial infections due to changes in the skin’s pH and moisture levels.

Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to the development of acne in some women during menopause, Dr Patel noted.
According to Dr Anuja Thomas, Consultant, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharghar, some rare conditions that can also affect people in menopause are Granuloma Annulare, which causes raised, bumpy patches on the skin and Lichen Sclerosus, which is characterised by thinning, white patches on the skin.
Dr Thomas recommended a check-up to understand the normal changes and detect any abnormal ones, which warrant treatment and follow-up.
To avoid these skin problems, certain preventive measures can be taken, according to the experts.
– Skincare routine: Maintaining a consistent skincare routine is crucial. Opt for gentle cleansers, moisturisers rich in ceramides, and products containing hyaluronic acid to combat dryness.
– Hydration: Regular moisturizing helps combat dry skin.
– Sun protection: Using sunscreen minimizes age spots and hyperpigmentation.
– Healthy diet: Nutrient-rich foods support skin health.
– Gentle cleansing: Avoid harsh cleansers to prevent further dryness.
– Regular exercise: Promotes blood circulation and skin vitality.
– Stress management: Stress reduction techniques can prevent flare-ups.
If skin problems cannot be entirely prevented, effective management strategies can be adopted.
For dryness, using moisturizers with emollient-rich ingredients and avoiding harsh soaps is beneficial, Dr Patel noted, adding that retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids can aid in improving skin texture and increasing collagen production.
For managing acne, incorporating salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide treatments into the skincare routine can be helpful, she said.
Prescription creams can address specific concerns, Dr Thomas noted, adding that procedures like chemical peels and laser therapy target various skin problems.
If issues like rosacea or eczema worsen, consulting a dermatologist for tailored treatment options, which may include topical or oral medications, can provide relief, according to Dr Patel.
Regular check-ups with a dermatologist ensure that any emerging concerns are addressed promptly, leading to a healthier and more comfortable menopausal skin journey
Dr Thomas recommended seeking support from loved ones or professionals to manage emotional impact.
