The practice of placing planters and racks, officials noted, is leading to encroachment on public land.
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to formulate a clear policy regarding the installation of planters and racks outside under-construction houses in GMADA-developed new sectors of the city. The decision was taken after a detailed discussion during the MC House meeting, where members agreed that such installations should be permitted strictly as per a defined policy.
During the meeting, it was pointed out that in several newly developed sectors, residents are placing planters, racks and other temporary structures outside their houses according to personal convenience. This practice, officials noted, is leading to encroachment on public land. As a result, the width of roads and footpaths is being affected, which could create serious problems for traffic movement and sanitation in the future.
The House decided that an official communication would be sent to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), seeking clarity and coordination on the issue. Under the proposed policy, the letter will outline that permission for planters and racks outside houses will be granted only within a specified and clearly demarcated area. Any construction or installation beyond the approved limits will be treated as illegal encroachment.
Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu emphasised that the objective of the policy is not to harass residents but to ensure planned and systematic urban development. “The aim is to keep the city organised and prevent future complications,” the mayor said.
Once implemented, the policy will ensure uniform rules across all new sectors, reducing the scope for disputes and confusion. The MC expressed confidence that, with GMADA’s cooperation, the policy can be enforced effectively, contributing to orderly growth and better civic management in Mohali.
