Toggle over to your Instagram Explore page and type lymphatic drainage in the search bar. You will receive hundreds of results with people wielding many a tool at their bodies in the name of this “health” phenomenon. According to TikTok, nearly 737 million people have watched videos bearing the hashtag. Testimonies galore in the service of scraping your bodies to reduce cellulite, using gua sha for a sculpted jawline, or dry brushing for “detoxifying”. But do these really work?

Before we answer that question, it is important to understand what a lymphatic drainage massage entails, and how it targets the body.

What is a lymphatic drainage massage?

Dr Niti Gaur, dermatologist at Citrine Clinic, Gurgaon, explained it as a technique that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system and promotes the removal of excess fluid, toxins, and waste products from the body.

“It involves gentle, rhythmic movements that target specific lymph nodes and lymphatic pathways. By stimulating lymphatic flow, it is believed to aid in detoxification,” she said.

How does it target the lymphatic system?

Imagine the lymphatic system as your body’s defence and clean-up clan. It is like a chainwork of tiny pipes and checkpoints all over the body. Dr Jayati Sampat, physiotherapist at Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, helpfully elaborated on the inner workings of the lymphatic system.

The clean-up clan (lymphatic vessels) – These tiny pipes collect the extra fluid that seeps out of our tissues, similar to how a mop soaks up liquids.
The checkpoints (lymph nodes) – Along the way, there are junctions at which these checkpoints are placed. They screen for any bad stuff like germs and foreign bodies.
Immunity warriors – Inside the checkpoints, lie the immunity cells. If they find any intruders, they alert the cells and start a battle.
Recycling system – After the defence system turns off the alert mode, the fluid goes back into our stream of blood and brings the body’s balance back to normalcy.

Dr Swapna Priya, consultant dermatologist, CARE Hospitals, explained that the scraping of the dry brush or the gua sha, and the other types of lymphatic drainage massages are believed to encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body.

Why is the trend gaining popularity now?

There are two main reasons why lymphatic drainage massages are trending these days. First, there is a growing interest in holistic health practices that focus on the body’s natural detoxification processes, and lymphatic drainage massages are seen as a way to support the body’s own cleansing mechanisms, said Dr Gaur.

The second reason is that lymphatic drainage massages are often promoted as a non-invasive and natural method for improving the appearance of the skin, which increases their appeal manifold because who wouldn’t want to try their hand at an easy way to reduce the ziddi (stubborn) cellulite marring our bodies? However, the veracity of the claim is yet to be tested.

How does it feel on the skin? Can it really reduce cellulite?

Losing cellulite is not as simple as just receiving lymphatic drainage massages.

According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, dermato-surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, while lymphatic drainage massages can temporarily reduce fluid retention and improve the appearance of the skin, they are not a permanent solution for cellulite.

“Cellulite is a complex issue, and its reduction typically requires a combination of lifestyle changes, exercise, and a healthy diet,” she said, adding that cellulite is caused by factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, and connective tissue structure.

Are there any other benefits of lymphatic drainage? Any side effects?

Dr Priya listed some of the benefits as reduced swelling, improved immune function, and relaxation, primarily related to improving lymphatic circulation and reducing fluid retention.

“This can also result in temporary relief from swollen or puffy areas, and an improved skin tone and texture,” added Dr Gaur.

However, side effects can include mild soreness, temporary increase in urination, or feeling lightheaded due to the detoxifying effect, explained Dr Priya. It is important to consult a healthcare professional before undergoing any massage therapy, especially if you have specific health conditions.

Who should try it? Can you do it at home?

According to Dr Gaur, lymphatic drainage massages are suitable for individuals who experience fluid retention, swollen areas, or seek relaxation. It can also be beneficial for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as lymphedema.

Dr Sampat explained that it is also advised in post-surgical healing to improve localised drainage and promote recovery. “These lymphatic drainage techniques are performed by trained therapists who use targeted techniques to work on the pathways to improve the flow,” she said.

Those with certain medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure or active infections, should consult a healthcare provider before trying it, Dr Priya cautioned.

Although you can perform a basic lymphatic drainage massage at home using your hands in gentle, sweeping motions, Dr Kapoor advised against it. “It is best to consult with a qualified massage therapist or healthcare professional to determine the right frequency and massage for your specific situation,” she said.
