Weight loss to improved digestion: Unlocking the myriad benefits of the Japanese water therapy
The Japanese water therapy is gaining traction for its potential health benefits. Here's how it works

In the realm of wellness practices and holistic health, an intriguing and age-old ritual from the Land of the Rising Sun has been gaining traction — Japanese water therapy. A straightforward, yet fascinating daily ritual that advocates the transformative power of water for overall well-being, Japanese water therapy is rooted in the ancient wisdom of the country’s distinct culture.
According to Dr Kiran Dalal, chief dietitian, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, Japanese water therapy has its roots in the age-old practice of drinking water immediately after waking up.
Also known as “Ukikusa Shinsui,” Dr Madhumidha, MBBS, MD – Internal Medicine, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chennai explained that it is the practice of consuming water in a specific manner to optimise health. “The recommended routine typically involves drinking water immediately upon waking, before engaging in any other activities. Advocates of this therapy suggest starting with small sips and gradually increasing the water intake over time.”
How Japanese water therapy works
The practice is simple yet methodical. Here are the recommended steps:
*Morning hydration ritual: Upon waking up, before engaging in any other activities, drink four to six glasses of room temperature water (approximately 160-200 ml each). The water should be consumed slowly, allowing the body to absorb it effectively.
*Oral hygiene: After the water intake, it is suggested to perform regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing teeth and cleaning the mouth.
*Wait before eating: Post water consumption, it is recommended to wait at least 45 minutes before consuming any food or beverages. This is believed to allow the body to absorb nutrients more efficiently.
*Meal considerations: When it comes to meals, it is advised to practice mindful eating. Chew food thoroughly and avoid drinking too much water during meals to aid digestion.
What are the benefits of the Japanese water therapy?

As per Dr Dalal, the practice has a variety of health benefits, including:
*Improved digestion: Drinking water on an empty stomach can help to stimulate the digestive system and promote regularity. This is because water helps to break down food and move it through the digestive tract more efficiently.
*Weight loss: Drinking water before meals can help fill you up and reduce your calorie intake. This is because water takes up space in your stomach and can make you feel fuller for longer.
*Improved skin health: Drinking plenty of water helps to hydrate the skin, keeping it looking healthy and glowing.
*Boosted energy levels: Dehydration can lead to fatigue and low energy levels. Drinking plenty of water can help combat this and improve your overall energy levels.
*Reduced risk of kidney stones: Drinking water helps flush toxins out of the kidneys and reduce the risk of kidney stones.
However, Dr Dalal cautions against drinking large amounts of water quickly as it can lead to overhydration, leading to symptoms like headache, nausea, and dizziness.
Additionally, while some studies have shown the potential benefits of Japanese water therapy, Dr Dalal confirms that the scientific research on its specific effects is limited. It is important to note that Japanese water therapy is not a cure-all and should not be used to replace conventional medical treatment.
“The amount of water that is safe and effective for each person can vary depending on their individual needs and health conditions. You can consult a doctor or registered dietitian to determine the appropriate amount of water for you,” Dr Dalal concluded.
