As the scorching summer heat comes knocking on our doors, wearing a pair of sunglasses becomes essential before heading out.

Finding the right sunglasses to suit your face shape can elevate your style while also protecting your eyes from the sun’s harsh glare. So, choosing ones that look good on you can significantly boost your confidence.

To help you make the best choice, we’ve consulted with Harish Kumar, organiser of In-Optics, a B2B International Exhibition of Eyewear, to learn which styles work best for various face shapes. He agrees, “Your face size and shape are crucial in determining the most suitable sunglasses for you.”

Firstly, it’s essential to identify your face shape before selecting sunglasses. Each shape has unique characteristics that can influence which sunglass styles will look most flattering. Kumar explains how to identify your face shape and choose glasses accordingly.

To identify your face shape, he recommends following these steps:

Measure cheekbone to cheekbone: Begin by placing a tape measure just below your eye to locate the top of your cheekbone. Measure to the same point on the opposite side of your face and note down the measurement.

Measure jawline: Find the ends of your jawbone below your ears and measure from one end to the other, around the bottom of your face.

Measure face length: From the center of your hairline, measure straight down over the front of your nose to the bottom of your chin. Once you have these measurements, you can determine whether your face shape is round, square, oval, rectangular, diamond, or heart-shaped.

According to Kumar, each shape corresponds to specific sunglass styles that compliment it:

Round Face

Opt for sunglasses that create the illusion of a slimmer and sharper face, such as rectangular or square frames, including colourful options.
Square Face

Balance the sharp angles of a square face with round or oval-shaped sunglasses.
Oval Face

Frames of any shape typically suit oval faces, but avoid oversized frames that may obscure your features.
Rectangular Face

Choose oversized sunglasses in square or rectangular styles, as well as vintage frames, while avoiding smaller frames.
Diamond Face

To complement a narrow jawline and forehead with wide cheekbones, opt for oval sunglasses and steer clear of oversized frames.
Heart Face

With a narrow chin and wide temples, round-shaped and cat-eye style sunglasses are most flattering.

Sunglasses size in relation to face shape and proportion

“The dimensions of your face, including its length, width, and features, are pivotal in selecting sunglasses that enhance your appearance,” informs Kumar. For instance, he continues, for a round face, opt for sunglasses that create a slim and sharp look. Conversely, individuals with diamond-shaped faces, characterised by wide cheekbones, should consider smaller frames to maintain balance. Additionally, your facial features influence the choice of sunglasses:

  • Soft and curvy facial lines complement cat-eye, rectangle, or square sunglasses.
  • Straight and angular facial features harmonise with round sunglasses.

Trends or tips for selecting sunglasses that transcend face shapes

Kumar recommends that while trends evolve, it’s essential to balance fashion with functionality when choosing sunglasses.

He says, “When uncertain, opt for timeless round-shaped sunglasses, a style that suits most face shapes. Classic black or brown lenses offer versatility, but for a contemporary touch, consider lighter lens colours, particularly during the Spring-Summer season. This ensures a fashionable yet enduring choice that transcends fleeting trends.”
