Stepping up the fight against air pollution as the Capital chokes amid deteriorating air quality, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been taking action against the construction sites violating the restrictions under GRAP IV, the highest level of anti-pollution curbs.
The civic body, in compliance with the directions of Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), has imposed challans amounting to Rs 33.95 lakh against violations related to construction and demolition in the past one week.
Under GRAP IV, construction and demolition activities remain strictly prohibited in the Capital.
During this period, the teams of the civic body conducted inspections across all zones, inspected 1,792 construction sites and issued 771 challans at the sites where violations were detected, said officials.
In November, the civic body had issued over 900 challans, amounting to Rs 1.5 crore.
Officials said the MCD imposed a Rs 5 lakh challan on a builder in Dwarka’s Sector 19B, besides levying penalties at another site for failure to adopt dust mitigation measures.
During field visits, MCD officials also sensitised workers and contractors about GRAP norms and dust-control measures, directing builders and site owners to strictly comply with the guidelines in force during GRAP-IV.
In a statement, the MCD reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards violations and said continuous monitoring, inspections and strict enforcement would continue. It also urged citizens and developers to cooperate with enforcement agencies in the larger interest of public health and air quality.
