Did you know that a simple tweak in your body language could give you a boost of confidence? It may sound like magic, but it’s not. This one small change in your posture can have a great effect on your day, making you feel unstoppable, according to experts.

Morgan Nelson, a content creator on Instagram shared a video mentioning, “Harvard University did this study: Can we increase the hormones in our body? Put your hands on your hips, they call it power pose”. The post is captioned, “The Power of Body Language.”

Dr Bharat Goswami, Consultant Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida said, “Adopting good posture (open and expansive body postures) can lead to increase in testosterone (a hormone linked to dominance and confidence) and decrease in cortisol (a stress hormone). Conversely, bad posture (closed and constrictive body postures) can have the opposite effect.”

How does this posture reduce cortisol levels?

The proposed mechanism is that body posture can influence the body’s endocrine system. When individuals adopt good poses, it may signal the brain to prepare for action, thus increasing testosterone and reducing stress, explained Dr Goswami.

Dr Goswami further added that in contrast, bad poses might signal the brain to adopt a defensive or submissive stance, leading to higher cortisol levels.

Scientific evidence supporting the idea

Dr Goswami mentioned, “Social psychologist Amy Cuddy and colleagues have shown that posture has affecting hormonal level.”

“Research suggests that maintaining a high-power pose for as little as two minutes can potentially result in changes in hormone levels. Amy Cuddy and her colleagues, participants who held power poses for two minutes experienced increases in testosterone and decreases in cortisol compared to those who held low-power poses”, said Dr Goswami.

Body postures to influence hormone levels

Extension postures in the body increase the healing of the body by virtue of the increase in healing factors or hormones that is why they are recommended, suggested Dr Goswami.
