Achieving baby-soft skin is among our top goals in the realm of beauty and skincare, so why would parents want to splurge on luxury products for their little ones, when after all their baby’s skin is already perfect? Well, Dior would disagree as it recently launched a skincare line specially catering to babies.

From scented water to cleansing foam, the designer brand has unveiled ‘a complete skincare line for little ones’. However, a question arises — whether babies need such an elaborate routine in the first place?

While experts concur that babies require skin care because of the delicate nature of their skin, they caution against going overboard. “Although newborns come into the world with a natural protective layer called vernix, taking care of their skin with a mild skincare routine is crucial. Babies have exceptionally sensitive skin, making it prone to irritation from various elements in the environment,” Dr Shikha Khare, consultant, dermatology, Yatharth Hospitals, explained.

In such a scenario, concerns have been raised that Dior’s baby skincare line could be harmful to babies. Instead, dermatologists recommend a simple skincare routine with products specifically formulated for gentle skin. “Using mild, fragrance-free baby products during baths, keeping the skin moisturised with hypoallergenic lotions, and ensuring prompt diaper changes are an integral component of a baby’s skincare routine,” Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant, dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said.

Here are some tips for keeping your baby’s skin healthy

According to Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, consultant, dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram:

*Bathing: Frequent baths aren’t necessary for babies unless they get particularly dirty. Two to three times a week for initial 1-2 months is generally sufficient. Use lukewarm water (around 95-100°F) and a mild, fragrance-free baby wash or cleanser. Avoid harsh soaps or detergents that can strip away natural oils from their skin.

*Moisturising: After bathing, gently pat your baby’s skin dry with a soft towel. While their skin is still slightly damp, apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturiser specifically formulated for babies. This helps lock in moisture and prevent dryness and irritation.

*Diaper care: Change your baby’s diaper frequently to prevent diaper rash. Use a mild, fragrance-free diaper wipe to clean the diaper area effectively. Pat the skin dry and apply a zinc oxide barrier cream or ointment to protect against moisture and irritation. Give a diaper-free interval in between, if possible, to avoid rashes and infections.

Sunscreen: Kid-friendly sunscreens are called ‘physical sunscreens’ with minimal chemicals. Once your baby is six months old, sunscreen becomes crucial for sun protection. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that is labelled as “safe for babies” or “pediatric-friendly.” Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed skin 15-20 minutes before going outdoors.

*Nail care: Keep your baby’s fingernails short to prevent them from scratching themselves. Use a blunt-tipped baby nail trimmer or file their nails gently when they’re asleep.

Dr Mahajan further advised to opt for gentle ingredients that nourish and protect delicate skin. “Use products containing shea butter for moisturising, as it is a natural emollient with soothing properties. Aloe vera is another beneficial ingredient, known for its calming effect. Chamomile can also help reduce inflammation and soothe irritation.”

On the other hand, he warned against using harsh chemicals such as sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, commonly found in some skincare products. “Choose fragrance and alcohol-free products. Additionally, mineral oils and petroleum-based ingredients may clog pores and should be avoided.”

So, while the allure of high-end skincare for babies may be tempting, expert consultation remains the compass that guides parents towards informed and safe choices for their little ones.
