Let's understand more about back pain and it's relation with sugar (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock)Sugar is one of the worst foods, and can have a major impact on the body’s energy levels while also increasing the risk of obesity and diabetes. But if chiropractor Dr Jeff Winternheimer D.C. is to go by, excessive sugar consumption is worse for individuals with back pain. “Sugar-rich diets can lead to weight gain and obesity, increasing the stress on the spine and exacerbating back pain,” said Dr Winternheimer.
He further explained that high sugar intake has been linked to chronic inflammation, which can worsen pain and discomfort. “Sugary foods and beverages can also contribute to the development of conditions like type 2 diabetes, which may lead to nerve damage and further intensify back pain,” Dr Winternheimer noted in a post on Instagram.
Additionally, sugary diets often lack the necessary nutrients for maintaining healthy bones and muscles, essential components for a strong and pain-resistant back. “Therefore, minimizing sugar intake is crucial for not only preventing weight-related stress on the spine but also reducing inflammation and promoting overall musculoskeletal health, ultimately offering relief and improved well-being for those struggling with back pain,” he noted.
Dr Rajat Mahajan, senior consultant, spine services, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Delhi clarified that there isn’t a direct link between sugar consumption and back pain, but excessive sugar intake can contribute to conditions that may lead to or worsen back pain.
Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai affirmed the co-relation and said that inflammation results in chronic (long-term) joint and back pain.

This might exacerbate existing back pain or contribute to conditions like arthritis, where inflammation is a significant factor, said Dr Mahajan. “Excessive sugar can lead to weight gain, which increases pressure on the spine and may result in back pain. Extra weight, particularly around the abdomen, can strain the back muscles and spine,” said Dr Mahajan.

A diet high in sugar can negatively impact muscle and joint health, possibly making the muscles and tissues around the spine more prone to injury or discomfort, noted Dr Mahajan.
“Regular exercise like swimming, jogging, cycling, and weight training can release anti-inflammatory mediators and endorphins which can decrease inflammation. Reducing sugar intake may help mitigate these factors, leading to better overall health and potentially reducing back pain,” said Dr Mahajan.
