Haryana has shattered its own record for VIP vehicle numbers, with the registration plate HR88B8888 fetching an astonishing Rs 1.17 crore, the highest amount ever paid for a car number in India.

The bidding took place on the state’s official VIP-number auction portal and wrapped up at 5 pm on Wednesday. The plate, part of the Kundli RTO series in Sonipat, drew fierce competition from the start. By noon, the offers had already crossed Rs 88 lakh, before finally touching the unprecedented crore-plus mark.

Officials say the frenzy was driven by the plate’s striking design, a full line of eights, with the letter ‘B’ adding to the visual illusion by resembling an “8”. Such sequences are hugely coveted by numerology fans and luxury-car owners who see them as symbols of luck and prestige.

India Today reported that this week’s auction saw unusually high participation, far above the typical turnout for Haryana’s fancy-number sales. Though the base price for HR88 series plates was only Rs 50,000, aggressive bidding pushed the amount into crore territory, a first for the country.

Haryana holds online auctions every week, with registrations opening on Fridays and bidding running into midweek. Winners get five days to make the full payment and secure the number for their vehicle. Once the formalities are done, HR88B8888 will be allotted to a vehicle registered in Kundli.

The record-breaking sale has further stoked the already booming demand for VIP number plates in the state. Social media reactions poured in as well.

One user joked, “He paid way more for the number plate than the amount that he would save in speeding tickets and challans…” Another wondered why such numbers attract so much money: “People really have a lot of money and nothing to spend on.”

A third pointed out how other countries handle special plates: “In India, we can’t keep the number plate after selling the car. In Dubai… you can continue with the same number after selling the car.”
