A video from Pratapgarh railway station showing postal bags being thrown onto the tracks has sparked swift action from India Post. The clip, filmed near Platform 3 shortly after the Punjab Mail arrived, triggered an internal review of how the mail was being handled.

According to HT.com, officials confirmed on Thursday that the footage was genuine. Senior officers inspected the location on Wednesday and sought an explanation from the staff seen in the video.

Rajeev Umrao, postmaster general of the Prayagraj region, said the inquiry found that the employees, reportedly rushing to dispatch the mail on time, used an improper and unsafe method. The investigation also highlighted a bigger, ongoing issue: the absence of a sloped footbridge connecting Platforms 2 and 3 to the Railway Mail Service (RMS) office on Platform 1. As trolleys cannot be taken across the existing route, staff often resort to crossing the tracks, an unsafe practice made worse during heavy mail days.

The video has also drawn the attention of the railway police and other authorities, who said they are reviewing the footage and will act against those responsible. Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division noted, “These are RMS packages and are handled by India Post staff. The concerned RMS authorities are being advised to take corrective action.”

India Post has since begun disciplinary proceedings and issued strict instructions to prevent similar incidents. Officials said a letter has been sent to the divisional railway manager, Lucknow, urging the construction of proper infrastructure to ease RMS operations.

In a statement, India Post added, “We sincerely regret the incident shown in the video… We remain committed to ensuring safe handling of all mail.”
