Bharti Singh recently opened up about doing intermittent fasting and shared her experience, too. “I also did intermittent fasting. But I was not completely hungry all day. I ate around 7 pm…and these days too, we continue to do. My morning breakfast is at 10 am. So, I have an automatic fasting of 16 hours,” Singh said on her YouTube channel.

Detailing the contents on her breakfast plate, the comedian and TV host added, “I have a proper breakfast thali. White butter, paratha, and black tea. I don’t have milk and curd. I have a pickle. I have food at that time. And then I eat at 7 pm. Then we sleep by 12 am. So, there’s a five-hour gap.”

Taking a cue from her revelation, we asked an expert how 16 hours of fasting helps.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and fasting. Unlike traditional diets that focus on what you eat, this popular fasting method focuses on when you eat. “During fasting periods, your body switches from burning sugar to burning stored fat,” said Dt. Vaishali Verma, consultant, nutrition and dietetics, Manipal Hospital Dwarka.

Experts suggest that when done properly, it can result in weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and reduced inflammation.

16/8 method: This involves fasting for 16 hours and having an 8-hour eating window each day. For example, like Bharti, you could skip lunch and have breakfast and eat dinner at 7 pm.

What to note?

Most healthy adults can try intermittent fasting. However, Verma said that it’s essential to consult a doctor before starting, especially if there are “underlying health conditions, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of eating disorders”.

What kind of drinks can you have during the fasting window?

Verma said that it is beneficial to drink water, black coffee, or unsweetened tea during your fasting window. “Listen to your body. If you feel unwell during your fast, break it and try again another time,” said Verma.
