(Photo: AP) Anthony Geary, who rose to fame in the 1970s and ’80s as half the daytime TV super couple Luke and Laura on “General Hospital,” has died. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Anthony Geary, whose portrayal of Luke Spencer helped define General Hospital and daytime television,” ABC said in a statement confirming his death.
Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, said the cast and crew were heartbroken. “Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for,” he said. Paired with Genie Francis’ Laura Webber, Geary became a household name, pushing soap operas into the cultural mainstream.
The 1981 wedding of Luke and Laura was a television event unlike any other. Shown in two parts, it drew around 30 million viewers and featured guest appearances, including Elizabeth Taylor, making it one of the most-watched moments in soap history.
Francis paid tribute to her longtime co-star, calling him “one of a kind”. “No star burned brighter than Tony Geary,” she said. “He was filled with a passion for truth no matter how blunt and always hilariously funny.”
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Luke after joining General Hospital in 1978. He played the role on and off until 2015 and returned briefly for a cameo in 2017.
Anthony Geary was an American television and stage actor, best known for playing Luke Spencer on the long-running soap opera General Hospital. He died at the age of 78. In later years, Geary lived a quiet life in Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama, and remained respected as one of the most influential actors in soap opera history.

Born in Coalville, Utah, to Mormon parents, Geary discovered acting while studying at the University of Utah. He was noticed during stage performances and later joined a touring company of The Subject Was Roses, which brought him to Los Angeles and opened the door to television work.
Before General Hospital, Geary appeared in several popular TV shows, including Room 222, All in the Family, The Partridge Family, The Mod Squad, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Streets of San Francisco and Barnaby Jones. He also acted in other soaps such as The Young and the Restless and Bright Promise, and remained active in theatre throughout his career.
Luke Spencer was never meant to be a traditional hero. The character began as a small-time criminal hired to break up Laura’s marriage to Scotty Baldwin. The storyline took a darker turn with Luke’s sexual assault of Laura a plot that later led to controversy but eventually evolved into a long-running redemption arc. Luke went on to become a central figure in Port Charles, even serving as mayor.
“He was created to be an anti-hero,” Geary said in a 2015 interview. “He’s all shades of grey, and that has been the saving grace of playing him all these years.”
In his personal life, Geary lived quietly in Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama. Reflecting on fame in a 1993 interview, he once said playing Luke came with heavy expectations. “I felt like I had to be Luke 24 hours a day or people would be disappointed.”
Anthony Geary leaves behind a legacy that reshaped daytime television and a character that remains one of its most enduring figures.
