We all have our favourites when it comes to working out. Vidya Malavade is no different. The Chak De! India actor shared recently that one of her “favourite Pranayams is Kapalbhati…”

“So many physical emotional psychological benefits but the best I feel is the way it takes me into the state of complete relaxation awareness and oneness,” expressed Malavade in a post on Instagram.

Taking a leaf out of her breathing practice, we decided to learn how to ably do it and how it benefits our bodies and minds.

Dr Hansaji Yogendra, director, The Yoga Institute explained that the ancient yogic kriya called Kapalbhati translates quite literally to “shining forehead”. “This practice not only uplifts the mind but also rejuvenates the face, bringing about a radiant glow,” said Dr Hansaji.

How to do Kapalbhati?

*Begin by sitting in a comfortable meditative posture, ideally Sukhasana or the easy pose.
*Inhale and exhale sharply, forcefully, and quickly. Ensure that the facial muscles remain relaxed and not contorted.
*As you perform these breaths, the muscles of the throat will naturally engage.
*Avoid excessive nostril flaring and aim for minimal body movement. The primary focus is on forceful breathing, mentioned Dr Hansaji.

“You’ll notice a moderate sound generated by the friction of your breaths. Ensure the breaths are short, sharp, and consistent in both inhalation and exhalation,” said Dr Hansaji.

Complete ten such breaths to constitute one round without pause. You can aim for 3 to 5 rounds in a session.
