Groom-to-be Naga Chaitanya recently shared his thoughts on working out and what it means for him. “For me, fitness is…everyone thinks working out in the gym is all that you have to do, but no! It’s 70 percent your diet and 30 percent your workout,” the Laal Singh Chaddha actor said.

In a conversation with CurlyTales, he also shared his morning ritual. “I drink 500 ml of water,” he said, adding that his go-to breakfast is “eggs, peanut butter toast, and filter coffee.”

Following his admission, let’s understand why diet plays a crucial role in one’s fitness journey.

Dr Bhavana P, chief dietitian, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, said that a toned body and good fitness are a combination of disciplined lifestyle choices, consistent exercise, and proper nutrition. “The foundation of a ripped physique is a well-rounded approach that prioritises health and sustainability over quick fixes such that diet has the most important role to play,” said Dr Bhavana.

What is a good diet?

A balanced diet is rich in lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. “Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, while complex carbohydrates provide the energy needed for intense workouts. Healthy fats, such as those found in avocados and nuts, support overall health and hormone production,” said Dr Bhavana.

Jaya Jyotsna, dietician at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, said that for optimum fitness levels, it’s important to combine a well-balanced diet with an effective fitness routine.

*High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): This involves alternating between short bursts of intense activity and rest or low-intensity exercise. It boosts metabolism and burns a lot of calories in a short time.

*Strength training: Builds muscle mass, which increases your resting metabolic rate, allowing you to burn more calories even when at rest.

*Cardio workouts: Running, cycling, or swimming can help burn calories and improve cardiovascular health.

*Consistency and progression: Ensure regular workouts and gradually increase the intensity to avoid plateaus.

Dr Bhavana also noted that hydration is crucial for muscle function and recovery, while omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, reduce inflammation and support muscle growth. “Including fatty fish like salmon in your diet provides essential proteins and healthy fats, aiding in achieving a ripped physique by promoting lean muscle,” said Dr Bhavana.

Combining these elements with a healthy, balanced diet will enhance weight loss results. Remember to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new fitness routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
