Gaining weight is absolutely normal during pregnancy, with most women putting on anything between 5 to 18 kilos. But, in an attempt to lose this weight, many new mothers opt for various means right after delivery without allowing the body to heal itself properly. As such, a fad that has become extremely popular is using abdominal belts to lose belly fat — but is it effective and advisable? To seek an answer to this commonly-asked question, we reached out to experts. Take a look at what they had to say.

Highlighting the same, Dr Amina Khalid, an obstetrician-gynaecologist, wrote on Instagram, “There is no harm in wearing abdominal binders or belts post-delivery –be it a vaginal or Caesarean. However, what matters is why you want to wear it. If you are planning on wearing it thinking it’s going to help reduce your abdomen, it’s not going to. There is no substitute for healthy eating and exercise for reducing belly fat or toning up the muscles.”

Adding, Dr Akta Bajaj, Senior Consultant and Head-Obstetrics Gynaecologist, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals said, “Abdominal belts, also known as postpartum belts, are often marketed as a solution to help reduce belly fat after pregnancy. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that abdominal belts can reduce belly fat.”

They can help to improve posture, reduce back pain, and provide support to the abdominal muscles as they heal from pregnancy and childbirth. They may also help to reduce swelling in the abdominal area.”
