Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has been busy promoting his film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, alongside co-star Tiger Shroff. In a recent episode of The Ranveer Show podcast by Ranveer Allahbadia aka beerbiceps, Akshay offered a personal perspective on breakups and navigating heartbreak.

Opening up about his own experiences, Akshay revealed he’s had “two or three” breakups before meeting his wife, Twinkle Khanna. When asked for advice for younger audiences dealing with heartbreak, Akshay shared, “Mere sath jab break-up hua tha, 2-3 baar hua hai (Whenever I had a breakup, I had 2-3 of them), I used to exercise more. Channelise it. Because there was so much anger, you have to channel it.”

Tiger Shroff echoed Akshay’s sentiment, suggesting that breakups can create an opportunity for self-investment with the extra time available.  We gathered expert advice from life coaches and therapists on overcoming relationship heartbreak, while also analysing the effectiveness of Akshay’s approach.

How to effectively recover from a breakup

While Akshay’s focus on exercise has merit as a way to release pent-up emotions, experts recommend a more holistic approach. Dr Roshan Mansukhani, music therapist and counsellor in Mumbai suggests channelling energy into rediscovering a neglected hobby, as it allows for a deeper level of engagement and disconnection from negative thoughts.

He also emphasised the crucial role of talking to a neutral and non-judgmental person after a breakup. This “venting out” leads to healthier conversations and self-perception.

Though Dr Mansukhani acknowledged the importance of expressing emotions through tears, he warned against prolonged sulking, and encouraged disconnecting from the negative thought cycle to avoid making it a comfort zone. The key, he said, “is to stand up, understand life’s lessons, and move forward.”

Jaisleen Kaur, image consultant and life coach, offered additional tips for healthy breakup recovery:

Acceptance and Self-Compassion: Acknowledge your pain and practice self-compassion. Allow yourself to grieve and understand that these feelings are normal.
