Dr Shriram Nene has repeatedly advocated for good, healthy habits that can enhance one’s quality of life. In keeping with the same, the cardiothoracic surgeon recently shared a hack that has helped him develop focus and keep at it. “As a surgeon, multitasking, to me, is not multitasking, but it’s serial sequential tasking. And what you are doing is putting things into play while you are focusing on your operative field, so that nothing else bothers you. If you can keep that level of focus in front of you while all the other things are happening in sequence, you will be a success story,” Dr Nene said in an Instagram reel.

In simple words, serial sequential tasking refers to the process of completing one task before starting a new one. It differs from multitasking, which includes simultaneously completing tasks. This hack, according to Dr Nene, can help enhance mental clarity and help you stay calm and go about your day.

Does it work?

Dr Nene’s mantra for focus emphasised the importance of intention and clarity in achieving one’s goals. “Serial sequential tasking, a method often recommended by psychologists, involves focusing on one task at a time in a specific sequence rather than multitasking,” said Dr Santosh Bangar, senior consultant psychiatrist, Gleneagles Hospitals, Pare,l Mumbai.

“This approach improves concentration and reduces cognitive load, as it prevents the mental fatigue often associated with juggling multiple activities. By prioritising tasks and addressing them in hierarchical order, individuals enhance their efficiency and productivity,” shared Dr Bangar.

To practice serial sequential tasking, individuals can follow these steps:

To-do list: Write down all tasks that need to be completed.
Prioritise: Rank tasks based on urgency and importance.
Focus on one task: Commit to completing a single task before moving to the next, ensuring full attention is given.
Minimise distractions: Create an environment conducive to focus by eliminating or reducing interruptions.
Take breaks: After completing a task, take brief breaks to refresh the mind and maintain energy levels.

This method not only enhances productivity but also fosters a sense of accomplishment, which can motivate continued focus and engagement in various aspects of life.
