The Haryana unit of Congress Wednesday staged a protest outside the BJP state headquarters, Panchkamal, in Panchkula, following a Delhi court’s refusal to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) chargesheet in the National Herald money laundering case.

Terming the court’s decision a “moral and legal victory,” Congress leaders accused the Centre of misusing investigative agencies to target political opponents.

A large number of Congress leaders and workers, including MLAs, former MLAs, district presidents, and senior party functionaries, marched from the Gymkhana Club to the BJP state office, where they staged a sit-in protest. The demonstration was led by Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Haryana Congress president Rao Narendra Singh. Protesters raised slogans against the BJP and Centre, alleging political vendetta and attacks on democratic institutions.

The protest in Panchkula was part of a nationwide call given by the Congress after a Delhi court declined to proceed further on the ED’s complaint related to the National Herald case. In the case, the court reportedly observed that the matter was based on a private complaint and that, in the absence of the registration of an FIR for the predicate offence, the ED could not continue its proceedings.

Addressing the gathering, Hooda said, “The order had exposed the illegal and politically motivated actions of the Centre. The court has made it clear that investigative agencies are being misused to harass opposition leaders. False cases were filed against Congress leaders out of political malice, but truth has finally prevailed. The case against former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and senior leader Rahul Gandhi was baseless and politically driven.”

Rao Narendra Singh called the verdict “a failure” of Modi government’s “conspiracy.” He said that “the court had clearly noted the lack of legal grounds for the ED’s action”.

“The BJP tried to construct a building of lies without any foundation. There was neither any transaction nor any money laundering. The court’s order has proved that truth inevitably triumphs over falsehood, even if it takes time.”

He questioned the basis of the allegations, asking under what category of crime the transfer of a company’s loan could be considered money laundering.

During the protest, heavy police deployment was made outside the BJP headquarters, and barricades were pitched to prevent protesters from entering the premises. Some Congress workers climbed onto the barricades and raised slogans to register their protest.
