Adulteration in daily essentials like milk and paneer has gone far beyond simple fraud and has emerged as a grave threat to public health, a recent report tabled in Parliament has revealed raising serious concerns about Punjab, particularly the fast-growing city of Mohali. Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi has written to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, urging immediate and stringent action against the adulteration mafia operating in the city.
Highlighting the ground reality, Bedi pointed out that while Mohali’s population has expanded rapidly, there has been no corresponding increase in animal husbandry or genuine milk production. “Despite limited availability of real milk, milk- and paneer-based products are being sold freely in every lane and locality. This itself raises serious questions,” he stated.
He noted that the number of cattle in villages and surrounding areas has declined, making it unclear how such large quantities of milk and paneer are entering the market. “Neither does the government have clear data on the source of this supply, nor are citizens being informed transparently. The result is widespread illness and rising healthcare expenses,” Bedi warned.
Calling for immediate administrative reforms, the Deputy Mayor demanded that staff strength in the Food Safety Department be increased and that monthly, mandatory sampling of milk and paneer be carried out across the city. He observed that households which once spent most of their income on food are now being forced to spend thousands of rupees on medicines, with senior citizens and young children being the worst affected by consumption of adulterated dairy products.
Bedi said, “Those selling fake milk and chemical paneer are playing with human lives. Such cases should not be treated as minor offences, charges as serious as culpable homicide must be considered.”
Emphasising that safeguarding public health is the government’s primary responsibility, he urged zero delay and zero tolerance against the adulteration network to ensure safe and pure food for the people of Mohali.
