With the conclusion of the campaigning for the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his 45-hour meditation at the renowned Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari on Thursday.

Before arriving at the memorial, the Prime Minister offered prayers at the Bhagavathy Amman Temple in Kanyakumari, following the end of the seven-phase Lok Sabha election campaigns. His last campaign event took place in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, on Thursday, ahead of the final voting phase on June 1.

Modi will meditate from Thursday evening until the evening of June 1 at Dhyan Mandapam, the site where the esteemed Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda is believed to have experienced a divine vision of ‘Bharat Mata’. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial perched on a rock amidst the vast expanse of the ocean, serves as a lasting tribute to his life and teachings.

A legacy etched in stone

Built in 1970, the memorial stands tall on one of the two small islets situated around 500 meters off the mainland. Legend has it that this very rock is where Swami Vivekananda attained enlightenment after meditating here for days in 1892.

The style reflects a beautiful confluence of Indian architectural traditions. The Vivekananda Mandapam, the main hall, showcases a blend of Chola and Rajput styles, while the squarish structure at the base, the Sripada Mandapam, represents a more monastic style.

Reaching the memorial involves a scenic ferry ride, offering breathtaking views of the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea.

Visitors can ascend the rock via a bridge or steps carved into the rock face. The Vivekananda Mandapam houses a life-size bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda, where visitors pay their respects. A meditation hall provides a serene space for quiet reflection.

Beyond the monument

The memorial’s significance extends beyond its architectural beauty. It serves as a repository of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, which emphasised the importance of self-reliance, education, and spiritual growth. The permanent exhibition within the memorial sheds light on his life and philosophy.

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Kanyakumari. It’s a place to learn about a remarkable spiritual leader, appreciate stunning natural beauty, and perhaps even find a moment of peace amidst the ocean’s embrace.
