A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit north-eastern Japan Monday night, injuring at least 30 people and prompting about 90,000 residents to evacuate. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the natural calamity struck the coast of the Aomori region at 11.15 pm, Reuters reported.

A tsunami reaching up to 70 centimetres (2 feet 4 inches) was recorded at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, just south of Aomori, while waves of up to 50 centimetres hit other coastal communities in the area, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Several videos capturing the chilling quake have emerged on social media, and one viral video captures a woman displaying the series of alerts she received just before the disaster struck. Sharing the video, an X handle @nexta_tv wrote, “The girl began receiving urgent alerts on her phone and quickly ran to take shelter. Japan is now under a tsunami warning. Waves of up to 3 metres are expected, and authorities are urging everyone near coastal areas or rivers to move to higher ground immediately.”

Another video shows the interior of the Aomori Broadcasting Hachinohe branch office, where tables, chairs, computer equipment, and other furniture can be seen shaking violently as the earthquake hits.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara directed residents to go to higher ground or seek shelter until advisories were lifted. Around 800 homes were without electricity, and the Shinkansen bullet trains and some local lines were suspended, he said.

At least 480 residents took shelter at the Hachinohe Air Base, and 18 defence helicopters were deployed for a damage assessment, Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said.
