As oil continues to ooze out from cargo ship MSC Chitra off the Mumbai harbour,a constable attached with the marine unit of the city police died this morning after he fell off a speed boat while patrolling near Chitra,which had collided with another vessel MSC Khalijia on Saturday.
The victim,Ramesh Tukaram More,45,and three other constables were patrolling in a speed boat in the early hours today around 1.5 nautical miles from the Chitra.
“More fell off the boat after he lost control. The other three constables could not rescue him as none of them including the victim knew swimming,” a police official
said.
More’s body was recovered by life guards later and sent to the J J hospital,officials said.
Several constables with the marine police unit of the city police have been patrolling on speed boats around the collision spot since Saturday,officials said.
Oil continued to spill for the third consecutive day today even as anti-pollution operations were being carried out by the Navy and the Coast Guard to check and neutralise the spill. Thirty three crew members,including two Pakistanis,were rescued following the incident.
