At least six youths on two motorcycles opened fire on a police van that was ferrying prisoners in Rohtak on Monday. Three prisoners sustained bullet injuries in the attack.
The incident took place in the afternoon near Rohtaks old ITI building,when over five armed youths on two motorcycles opened fire on a police van. When the police retaliated,the accused fled. Immediately after the incident,the police sealed the area and initiated a search a for the accused but failed to arrest them.
Meanwhile,the injured have been admitted to Rohtaks Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS). Later,Rohtak SP Rajesh Duggal and DSP Sumit Kohar visited PGIMS to record their statements. According to preliminary investigations,gang rivalry is likely to be behind the shootout.
The shooters targetted two prisoners from Pakasma village Naresh and his brother Krishan. Both are facing an attempt to murder trial. They were brought from Sunaria jail to Rohtaks district court this morning. After their hearing in the murder trial,they were being taken back to prison pm when the shootout took place, a police officer said. In the shootout,besides Naresh,two other prisoners Ajay and Rajesh also sustained bullet injuries.
According to the police,Naresh,Krishan and their father Raj Singh were booked on March 24,2011 on charges of shooting at Surender,a Pakasma village resident. While Surender sustained bullet injuries,Naresh,Krishan and Raj Singh were arrested on charges of attempt to murder. While Naresh and Krishan are still in jail,Raj Singh was released on bail a few months ago.
Soon after the attack,the Rohtak police constituted a special investigation team that claims to have identified the shooters.
