Home Minister P Chidambaram will make a short visit to Jharkhand on Saturday to discuss the issue of Naxalism in the state with senior officials. Chidambaram will leave in the morning in a special plane and return to the Capital the same evening,sources said.
The visit is part of Chidambaram’s plan to make first-hand assessments of internal security situations in the troubled states and assure the local officials there that the Centre will provide necessary assistance in their efforts to improve the security scenario.
Since taking over as the Home Minister in the first week of December,Chidambaram has made such visits to Maharashtra,Assam,Chhattisgarh. He has also visited the Delhi Police headquarters to interact with senior police officials and know about the difficulties being faced in policing the Capital.
Jharkhand is one of the four states affected by Naxalism,the others being Chhattisgarh,Orissa,Andhra Pradesh. With the state currently under President’s rule,the Centre’s role in maintaining law and order has also become important. Among other engagements,Chidambaram is likely to visit the new 24-hour control room set up by the state Government.
