A labourer was killed and eight others were injured after three slabs of an under-construction bridge in Bihar’s Supaul collapsed on Friday morning. Rescue operations are currently underway and efforts are on to ascertain if any more workers are trapped in the debris, officials said.

The 10.5 km-long bridge over the Kosi River connecting Bakour in Supaul and Bheja in Madhubani is being built at a cost of over Rs 1,200 crore. Though the foundation stone for the project was laid in 2014, the bridge is yet to be completed.

The incident took place at around 7 am. Three slabs from pillar numbers 152, 153 and 154 collapsed. “Rescue and relief work is underway to find out if more workers are trapped inside the debris,” Supaul District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar said.

A part of the Centre’s ambitious Bharatmala Project, the Supaul bridge is a joint venture between Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited and Transrail Lighting Limited. The project was awarded by Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Ltd and Transrail Lighting Limited is in charge of the construction.
