The Leftovers: Hotstar

This show is a rarity as it even after being an HBO show and good one at that, it did not receive a lot of attention. In The Leftovers, 2% of the world's population simply disappears. You might think 2% is almost nothing, but when it comes to the total number of people in the world, it is a lot. The show revolves around how people are dealing with the aftermath.

Lore: Amazon Prime Video

An Amazon Original, Lore is based on a podcast of the same name. Every episode of the show tells the origins of a horror story and although it is more of a documentary than drama, it is a slickly produced show that is engaging enough for a binge. You might want to check out the podcast as well. It is sublime.

Altered Carbon: Netflix

If your consciousness, practically the real 'you', can be converted to code, then the possibilities are endless, and not all of them pleasant. This is the premise of cyberpunk series Altered Carbon. The second season is streaming now.

15:49 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Lost: Netflix

Despite its controversial ending, ABC's Lost is still the definitive science-fiction drama show. The series had complex mythology whose details were revealed teasingly, bit by bit. The show also provided ample backstories of major characters through flashbacks that made them more fleshed-out than characters in other epic TV series. .

15:07 (IST)23 Mar 2020
The Man in the High Castle: Amazon Prime Video

Based on an intriguing what-if premise, The Man in the High Castle is an alternate reality show. In this world, the Axis powers won and the United States was carved up between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. Common Americans live under two foreign, oppressive regimes and they are resigned to their fate... until the people come across another reality -- our reality -- according to which things could be better.

14:42 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Rick and Morty: Netflix

The animated series follows a mad but brilliant scientist Rick Sanchez and his naive, impressionable grandson Morty Smith's adventures across faraway galaxies, planets, parallel worlds, different realities and so on.  Rick and Morty boasts some of the most intelligent writing in the medium currently, with jokes that are easy to miss if the attention wavers even a little. And before you have managed to wrap your head around it, the show has already moved ahead.

This is Us: Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video

Basically a family drama, This is Us contains many strands of romantic, flawed relationships. There is an element of switching between past and present here too, but while Outlander has actual time-travel, This is Us has good-old flashbacks.

Outlander: Netflix

This Starz series tells us that love-stories do not simply just exist, they are often improbable. The central love-story in this show is between a 20th-century Englishwoman and an 18th-century Scottish man. Claire is transported back in time and meets a Scottish young man she falls in love with. She does have a husband in her time and she is faithful, but there is no way to get to him. Outlander streams on Netflix.

13:24 (IST)23 Mar 2020
iZombie: Netflix

If only the zombies in The Walking Dead knew they would not lose their wits if they had a ready supply of human brains. At least that is the premise if this show, which is equal parts horrifying and funny (uproariously so). If you liked zombie comedies like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, you can't go wrong with this one.

12:54 (IST)23 Mar 2020
A Series of Unfortunate Events: Netflix

This show is based on the children book series of the same name and follows two young siblings as they try to protect themselves and their fortune from the devilish Count Olaf (played with a menacing glee by the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris). The series is the right mix of horror and comedy and you scarcely mind the improbability of the events unfolding before you, since it is incredibly entertaining.

12:31 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Netflix

This one is among the weirder and eccentric shows. Frodo of Lord of the Rings movies, Elijah Wood, plays an everyman whose life is turned into a veritable whirlwind a flamboyantly British "holistic" detective; holistic because he believes everything in the universe to be interconnected. And indeed, he has a seemingly preternatural ability. The feel of the show is like from one of the more strange comic-books from the 80s came to life. The story is loosely based on the writings of the great Douglas Adams.

12:09 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Black Sails: Netflix

There are few good shows on pirates, and Black Sails sits pretty on the top. Although the first season was marred by more talking than action, Black Sails picks up from second, gets better in third, and goes out with a bang with its fourth and final season. The story is the prequel of Treasure Island, classic adventure book by  Robert Louis Stevenson.

11:34 (IST)23 Mar 2020
Homecoming: Amazon Prime Video

Julia Roberts stars in this psychologicla thriller based on the podcast of the same name created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. Roberts plays the role of a social worker at a facility that apparently helps soldiers coming from war zones transition to the civilian life. Though, it is done by making the soldiers basically forget the bad stuff, creating a blank space in its place.

Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Shea Whigham also star in this tight, compelling thriller that needs to be watched to appreciate the superlative writing and performances.

16:47 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Supernatural: Amazon Prime Video

There is nothing like watching an atmospheric horror show. Supernatural is not one however, but is does have plenty of scares coupled with excellent characters (you could not ask for more developed characters than Winchester brothers) which makes it a solid TV show even if a sort of guilty pleasure.

16:16 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story: Netflix

Ryan Murphy’s anthology game remains strong. The Assassination of Gianni Versace was a worthy followup to The People v. O. J. Simpson.

15:58 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Succession: Hotstar

A deliciously funny and really well-written saga, HBO's Succession is a hypnotic watch from start to finish.

15:09 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Bojack Horseman: Netflix

This American adult animated web television series tells the story of BoJack Horseman (voiced by Will Arnett), a washed-up star of a 1990s sitcom who plans his return to celebrity relevance with an autobiography. The show is regarded by some as one of the greatest animated television series of all time. It stands out for its realistic take on dealing with depression, trauma, addiction, self-destructive behavior, racism, sexism, sexuality, and the human condition. The makers of the show decided to end the series with the sixth season and it is a definite must-watch. Fair warning: It gets very real.

14:50 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Ishq: Amazon Prime

Ishq, the Malayalam movie which hit the screens last year, is NOT a love story. The movie beautifully portrays a number of issues that is very prevalent in our society today, like moral policing, toxic masculinity etc. It is the anti-thesis of Kabir Singh. The movie disects aggresive patriarchy in such a way, that you will feel claustrophic. Click this link if you want more details about the film.

14:26 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Narcos: Netflix

This intriguing series chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most deadly and popular drug-lords of the world - Pablo Escobar. It also shows us how the cocaine trade began in Columbia and the efforts of DEA cops to stop them for wreacking havoc. It is one of the most popular web-series in the world and will keep you hooked right till the end.

13:57 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Bodyguard: Netflix

Looking for a tightly plotted edge-of-the-seat thriller? Look no further than Bodyguard. Richard Madden’s stars as a damaged war veteran David Budd tasked with protecting British Home Secretary. The job is not easy, but things are exacerbated by the fact that Bud has his own problems. He is seperated from his wife due to his PTSD. He has hardly any friends and lots of enemies. The suspense in the series is almost palpable. The story is just okay, but top-notch direction gives it a lift. It was only after its Netflix debut that the rest of the world realised why the Brits were so crazy about it.

13:24 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Deadwood: The Movie: Hotstar

Deadwood: The Movie is a sequel film to HBO’s iconic western TV series Deadwood created by David Milch that ran for three seasons from 2004 to 2006. The best part about the movie, like the series, is the writing and acting. The huge cast of talented actors (led by an impeccable McShane) get a chance to shine due to a compelling story and dialogues.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is a fascinating and well-made behind-the-scenes look at how the final season of possibly the most ambitious television production came into being.

Vikings: Netflix

Michael Hirst’s creation, Vikings is a depiction of the ancient Scandinavian raiders whose influence once extended to Africa in south and the Americas in the west. This TV series has a intriguingly shifty protagonist in Ragnar Lothbrok, based on a real life vikings. This show is chock full of complex characters who resemble actual humans instead of characters in a TV series. If all that is not enough to lure you in, this superb trailer sure will.

12:05 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Walking Dead: Hotstar

Although in terms of setting, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are vastly different, but both shows are pretty similar to each other when it comes to thematic elements. Important characters die horrible deaths and the whole world has a depressive aura. Conscientious people are killed off unless they steel themselves and become ruthless instead. And there are zombies. The show has overstayed its welcome, but the first few seasons are superb.

11:39 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Tudors: Netflix

The Tudors is based on the rule of somebody who I refer to as the Donald Trump of medieval England: Henry VIII. Like Game of Thrones, The Tudors also has a lot of court intrigue. It does suffer from over-glamourisation, and there is considerably more emphasis on costumes and make-up than plot and character development. It also suffers from pacing issues, and chooses style over substance. Still, The Tudors is worthy enough to distract you long enough (four seasons) from your Game of Thrones withdrawal symptoms.

11:21 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Last Kingdom: Netflix

Based on the amazing book series by British writer Bernard Cornwell, BBC’s The Last Kingdom follows the invasion of Danish vikings of the place that would later be called England. The protagonist is a torn man who loves the viking way of like but is a Northumbrian. His loyalties are so confused that he fights for Alfred (yes, the Alfred the Great) against the people he loves. The title sequence of The Last Kingdom shows a map of England which is being engulfed by a wave but stops just before Wessex - the last kingdom that held out and whose monarch - Alfred - first came up with the idea of England.

11:01 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Sopranos: Hotstar

The show that basically kicked off the golden age of television, The Sopranos made the medium the place where exciting content was available. Watch it just for the supreme performance of James Gandolfini, the late actor who was an absolute master at his craft.

10:43 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Game of Thrones: Hotstar

Yes, its end was a bummer. But isn't it all about the journey and not the destination? Before HBO's Game of Thrones, based on George RR Martin's fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, went bad, it was one show that brought almost the entire TV viewing population of the world together — almost everybody watched the show and those who did not were driven to watch it to find out the cause of brouhaha.

The Terror season 1: Amazon Prime Video

Horror The Terror's season 1 adapts Dan Simmons' 2007 novel of the name. Jared Harris stars as Captain Francis Crozier, Ciarán Hinds as Rear Admiral Sir John Franklin and Tobias Menzies as Commander James Fitzjames. They are all naval officers in a failed expedition to the Arctic. The actual expedition (yes, the novel is a fictionalised account of a real expedition) was led by Captain Franklin (played by Ciarán Hinds in the show) and did not come back. Not one man among 129 who went came back. Dan Simmons's novel gave a supernatural reason behind the doom, so does the series. It is a slow burn horror thriller that ends with a narrative crescendo.

09:57 (IST)22 Mar 2020
The Office: Amazon Prime Video

Haven't seen probably one of the best comedy series to ever grace the telly? Perhaps this is the time, when you have all the time in the world. A remake of the British series of the same name, enter the hilarious world of Dunder Mifflin in The Office.

09:40 (IST)22 Mar 2020
Criminal Justice: Hotstar

Based on the British crime drama series of the same name by Peter Moffat, Criminal Justice questions the loopholes in Indian criminal justice system. It stars Vikrant Massey, Pankaj Tripathi, Jackie Shroff, Anupriya Goenka and Mita Vashisht. The original series also inspired a brilliant HBO miniseries starring Riz Ahmed, Michael Kenneth Williams and John Turturro.
