Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi’s debut web series, Farzi, created by filmmakers Raj and DK, has achieved a new feat. It has become the most-watched Indian web series of all time, with a projected total of 37 million viewers. Released on Prime Video earlier this year, Farzi features Kapoor in the role of a street-smart criminal, while Sethupathi plays a trigger-happy cop.

As per a report by Ormax Media, Farzi took the top spot on the list of the most-watched original SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) series in India this week. It overtook the likes of Ajay Devgn’s Disney+ Hotstar series Rudra (35.2 million viewers), Pankaj Tripathi’s Mirzapur season 2 (32.5 million viewers), Jeetendra Kumar’s Panchayat 2 (29.6 million viewers), Pankaj Tripathi’s Disney+ Hotstar series Criminal Justice (29.1 million viewers) and Aditya Roy Kapur’s recently released thriller series, The Night Manager (27.2 million viewers).

Farzi is expected to be watched by over 37 million people in the country by the end of its run. Ormax Media calculates audience viewership by taking into account the number of people who watched at least a complete episode of a show or at least 30 minutes of a movie within 8 weeks of release. It doesn’t count repeat views.

Farzi, which started streaming on Prime Video in February, also stars Raashi Khanna, Kay Kay Menon, Regina Cassandra, Zakir Hussain, Bhuvan Arora, Amol Palekar and Kubbra Sait. Upon its release, the series received a mixed response from the audience and critics.

The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta found the series to be a ‘service to its star Shajid Kapoor’. A section of her review read, “The series slips in the fact of demonetisation, and of how corruption was meant to be curbed with the new notes, by slyly giving us corrupt, power-hungry netas (one is an MLA from, um, Gujarat; the other one, played by Zakir Hussain, gets a lot more screen time). An enthusiastic rookie (Raashii Khanna), also a smart cookie, joins the ‘farzi’ note busters, and often strikes off on her own, despite being explicitly told not to play a lone hand.”
