Maharashtra Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that 14,526 children in the age group of zero to five have died in seven districts of the state over the past three years.

Abitkar’s written reply came to a question raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sneha Dubey.

According to the reply, Pune, Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, and Yavatmal districts reported 14,526 child deaths between 2022-23 and 2024-25. The minister also admitted that 138 infant deaths have been recorded in Palghar district in the last six months.

As per the Sustainable Development Goals-2030 of the United Nations, the neonatal mortality rate should be brought down below 12 per 1,000 births.

The minister also referred to the Sample Registration System (SRS) 2023, released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India in September 2025, which estimated Maharashtra’s neonatal mortality rate at 11 per 1,000 births.

Abitkar said the state government has adopted multiple measures under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) to reduce malnutrition. These include regular health examinations, the Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Amrut Aahar Yojana for pregnant women, targeted interventions for SAM children, the Nutrition Campaign, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, and the ‘Suposhit Maharashtra’ initiative.
