Samantha Ruth Prabhu bawled on the sets of Raj and DK’s The Family Man 2: ‘Acting in Tamil and Telugu films was a luxury…’

Samantha opened up about her struggles in fitting into the world and working style of Raj and DK, and how she has been schooled by the director duo.

While Samantha Ruth Prabhu has often got to play author-backed roles in her films in Tamil and Telugu, her sojourn into the digital space gave her one of her most challenging characters. In the second season of Raj and DK’s The Family Man, Samantha essayed the role of Raji, the primary antagonist of the series. In fact, her compelling performance in the web series surprised many who didn’t conceive of her in such roles before. Now, Samantha is part of another Raj and DK series, Citadel: Honey Bunny, which is streaming on Prime Video. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Samantha recollected the first day of shooting with the director duo for The Family Man, and said, “I cried on the first day.”

Explaining what prompted this extreme response, Samantha said, “Working in my Tamil and Telugu films were a luxury when compared to working with Raj and DK.” Even as her Citadel co-star Varun Dhawan interjected by saying she was a super-duper star, Samantha argued, “It wasn’t even about being treated like a star. As opposed to shooting 2-3 scenes in a day in my films, here I was shooting them in an hour.”

Samantha shared that she expected the makers to ease into the shooting because hers was a very demanding role. “But some of the most intense portions of my role were shot in the first schedule in Chennai. In 2.5 days, we had finished shooting fights, breakdowns, etc… I remember calling my manager, crying and saying that I wanted to come back home.”

Raj and DK revealed that they had no clue she was going through so much emotions in her head during the shoot. “The thing is after 2 days of shoot in Chennai, she walked up to us and asked if we were done. After we said yes, she started bawling. We were looking at each other to see if either of us had said anything,” said Raj, adding, “That’s when I knew how much she had internalised.”

“What really happened that day was a release of sorts, I guess. It was just all intense, and shooting in really cramped spaces, and filming so many scenes in quick time. But now, I don’t know any other way to shoot,” said Samantha, adding, “I have been schooled the Raj and DK way of working. Now, I can’t sit idle on sets.”
